Philly's got a packed calendar coming up, and whether you're a soul music devotee, a comedy night regular, or someone who doesn't leave the house unless there's a serious bassline involved, there's something here worth putting on your calendar. Here's what's worth your time and money this June.
Thursday, June 11: A Night for Everyone
Honestly, June 11th might be one of the better single-night lineups Philadelphia has seen in a while. Five events across the city, all kicking off within a couple hours of each other - pick your lane.
Soul and R&B: The Luther Vandross Legacy Show
If you grew up with Never Too Much on repeat in your parents' living room, The Luther Vandross Legacy Show is a no-brainer. City Winery is the ideal room for this - intimate, table-service, good wine list. It's dinner and a show in the truest sense. This is perfect for date night or a grown-and-sexy group outing. Doors at 7:30 PM. Book early; City Winery's smaller capacity means this one fills up fast, and it will sell out.
Comedy Pick #1: Teachers Be Like...Comedy Show!
Teachers Be Like...Comedy Show! at Punch Line is exactly what it sounds like - comedy built around the chaos of the classroom, the impossible demands on educators, and all the absurdity that comes with it. If you're a teacher, work in a school, or have ever been a student (so, everyone), this is going to hit. Punch Line is a solid mid-size room with good sightlines and a full bar. Show starts at 7:30 PM, so don't drag your feet getting there.
Comedy Pick #2: Dan Docimo
Running parallel at Helium, Dan Docimo is worth knowing about if you haven't caught him yet. Helium consistently books comics who are on the rise before they're selling out theaters, and Docimo fits that mold. If you prefer a tighter, more focused stand-up set over a themed showcase, this is your Thursday night. Also 7:30 PM - can't do both, so choose wisely.
Dance and Pop: Kiesza
Kiesza at The Foundry is a genuinely exciting booking. She's a vocalist and performer with serious range - you know her from Hideaway, but her live shows go well beyond the hits. The Foundry is a great mid-size venue in Fishtown, and the 8:00 PM start gives you a little breathing room. Wear shoes you can actually move in.
Late Night: Chase & Status
If you're the type who doesn't really get going until after 9 PM, Chase & Status at The Ave Live is your event. The UK drum and bass duo have been doing this for twenty years and they still bring serious energy. The 9:30 PM doors signal what kind of night this is - loud, late, and unambiguous. Bring earplugs if you're sensitive; this is not background music.
Friday, June 12: Shampoo at Ortlieb's
Shampoo at Ortlieb's is one of those shows that rewards people who actually pay attention to the local and regional scene. Ortlieb's is one of the best small venues in the city - great sound, no bad spots, genuinely good vibe. Doors at 7:00 PM, which means you can make it a full Friday night without completely destroying your Saturday. Check the venue's website for cash bar policy; it's always smart to have some on you at smaller spots like this.
Two nights, six events, zero excuses. Go see something live.
