Summer is officially creeping into Minneapolis, which means the city's venues are heating up fast. Whether you're into indie rock, alt-pop, stand-up comedy, or just want an excuse to get out of the house on a Thursday night, the next few weeks have something worth circling on the calendar. Here's what's actually worth your time and money.

Thursday, June 11 - A Night Where You Literally Can't Go Wrong

Somehow, June 11 turned into one of the strongest single nights of local and touring entertainment Minneapolis has seen in a while. Four events, all different vibes, all on the same Thursday. Pick your lane.

The Cab - Varsity Theater | 5:30 PM

If you were a certain kind of teenager in the late 2000s, The Cab soundtracked a lot of your feelings. The Las Vegas pop-rock band broke up years ago and left a loyal fanbase still holding onto those hooks. This reunion-era run has been generating serious buzz from the emo and pop-punk faithful, and the Varsity is one of the better mid-size rooms in the city - good sightlines, great sound. Doors at 5:30 means this is an early show, so don't sleep on the start time. Grab tickets sooner rather than later; nostalgia acts like this tend to sell out quietly but quickly.

Lilith Max - 7th Street Entry | 7:30 PM

If you haven't caught Lilith Max yet, this is the kind of show you'll be telling people about in six months when her name is everywhere. 7th Street Entry is the perfect room for this - intimate, a little sweaty, the kind of place where you're close enough to actually feel the performance. For fans of moody, emotionally raw indie-pop with a sharp edge, this is your night. Get there early; the Entry fills up faster than people expect.

Aaron Hibell - Fine Line Music Cafe | 8:00 PM

Fine Line continues to be one of downtown Minneapolis's most reliable spots for discovering artists on the way up. Aaron Hibell brings a singer-songwriter sensibility with enough texture and production behind it to hold a full room. This is the show for someone who wants a more laid-back Thursday - find a spot near the bar, actually listen to the music, let the night unfold. Fine Line's sound system will do the rest.

JR De Guzman - Acme Comedy Company | 8:00 PM

Not every great night out involves a stage with guitars. JR De Guzman at Acme Comedy Company is the wildcard pick of the week - sharp, character-driven stand-up in one of the best comedy rooms in the Midwest. Acme has a two-drink minimum, so budget accordingly, and book ahead because Thursday night comedy shows here fill up more than people realize.

Friday, June 12 - Weekend Opener Done Right

Earlybirds Club - First Avenue | 6:00 PM

First Avenue. Need we say more? The name alone carries weight in this city, and Earlybirds Club landing on the mainroom stage for a Friday night show is a genuine moment. This is a great pick for groups - the room handles a crowd well, the bar setup is solid, and a 6:00 PM door means you can make a full evening of it without sacrificing the whole night. Classic Minneapolis experience.

Royal and The Serpent - Fine Line Music Cafe | 7:00 PM

Royal and the Serpent has built a devoted following around brutally honest, emotionally charged alt-pop - the kind of music that hits differently when you hear it live. Fine Line is the right size for this artist: close enough to feel the energy, large enough to let the sound breathe. If you followed her music during the pandemic years, seeing this set in person is the payoff. Tickets won't last long on a Friday night.

Two nights, six events, zero weak options. Minneapolis is doing what it does best right now - just show up.
